The Oval at Subi East has been shortlisted in the 2025 Australian Urban Design Awards.

OCULUS, together with design partner UDLA, provided urban design and landscape architecture for Development WA’s 35 ha Subi East site surrounding the former Subiaco Oval on Whadjuk Country in Perth.

The Subi East Redevelopment Masterplan represents one of the most significant urban infill projects in Western Australia’s built environment history. As the masterplan’s first built stage, The Oval transforms the former Subiaco Oval site into a series of community-focused public spaces, including a reimagined oval with community sports facilities, a playground, a parkour course, and an extensive vegetated art trail/Noongar Bidi. Restored entry gates, repurposed stadium elements, and an open-air museum celebrate WA football’s heritage. The result is a multi-generational asset honouring traditions and living memories – a place for whole-of-life city living for a diverse community.

Jointly convened by the Australian Institute of Architects, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and the Planning Institute of Australia, the Australian Urban Design Awards were established in 1996 to recognize contemporary Australian urban design projects of the highest quality and to encourage cities, towns, and communities across the country to strive for best practice in all projects.

Twenty-two projects from across Australia have been shortlisted. The winners will be announced on 30 April 2025 in Sydney.
