The 1960s-era design of the Van Ness Center Metro Plaza created a sunken space with stark visual and physical barriers between the streetscape and site. OCULUS designed a renovation for the Plaza that works with, rather than against, the significant grade changes of the site. The result was a design that established a revitalized sense of place along with strong visual and physical connections to both the Metro entrance and streetscape.

The clean, open plan incorporates a gently folded planted landform and graceful stair to negotiate the change in grade from the streetscape and Metro entrance down to the Plaza. Carefully chosen materials, a striking new paving pattern, custom-designed seating elements with integrated lighting, and a new water feature contribute to enliven the space.
