Located between the Washington Nationals Park and the Anacostia River, Riverfront is a new mixed-use development in Southeast Washington DC. The OCULUS-designed Master Plan incorporates mixed uses including residential, office, riverfront recreation, and retail development centered on a plaza and esplanade that will constitute the next piece in the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail system.

The plan was inspired by the ecological concept of an ecotone, the transitional zone between two biological communities. The design establishes a rich ecotone between the natural community of the Anacostia River and the adjacent urban community where natural processes, native species, urban activities, and people will overlap and interact. A key element in this dynamic space will be the new River Garden which will be planted with native riparian species, populated with custom and varied furnishings, activated by programming, and constructed out of materials adaptable to periodic flooding.

The Riverfront Master Plan Planned Unit Development was approved by the Washington DC Zoning Commission in 2012.
