OCULUS collaborated closely with Arlington County and local community representatives to develop the design for this new urban park located in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia. The resulting park design responds to the diverse needs of a changing urban population and the county’s focus on sustainable practices.

Located between newer, high-density, mixed-use developments and a residential neighborhood, Mosaic Park accommodates a range of active and passive recreational activities. A shady plaza space with custom seating elements and an interactive water feature are located along the more urban western edge while a variety of recreational spaces border the residential neighborhood to the east.

Sustainable energy and water technologies are also key elements in the design and function of the park. Sculptural “solar trees” will provide much-needed shade for park-goers while collecting solar energy to power both the water feature and site lighting. All on-site stormwater will be utilized to irrigate the park using new subsurface irrigation technologies.
