OCULUS provided campus planning and landscape architectural design services for the construction of new middle school facilities and other site improvements on the Norwood School’s 39-acre (16 ha) campus. The site-sensitive design was influenced by the character of existing buildings, mature trees, and dramatic topography, as well as programmatic needs, including student drop-off and pick-up, and outdoor play and recreational spaces.

The resulting campus plan sited new buildings as extensions of the historic campus, preserved viewsheds, and protected existing mature vegetation while introducing new native planting design to support outdoor learning objectives.

Further campus improvements included the design of a new, central courtyard in front of the historic Steuart Building. The design utilizes stone paving patterns to create a space suitable for formal outdoor events that also functions as a play space and large-scale game board.
